Party wear extends to weddings

Party wear has emerged as a new trend for brides, who are changing out of traditional dresses into mini dresses for their wedding receptions.

North Melbourne designer Jason Grech says the trend has grown in the past six months.

“The first dress is a bit more traditional, so something they’d wear to the ceremony and have pictures done, and then they’re doing a change just before their first dance into something a bit sexier, shorter and very party,” Grech says.

He says about seven brides have asked him to design two dresses this year.

“We’ve done a couple of box-pleated skirts, so really tight-fitted bottoms. They’ve had really beautiful silk and French lace, and embellishments,” he says.

“The most popular has been a really nice V-neck top with a shouldered detail and a box-pleated skirt… We find that brides these days don’t want to look as though they’re brides,” Grech says.

Grech also identified oyster as the “new white”. For fashion-focused entrepreneurs, the bridal-meets-party scene might be something to consider.
