New fashion designer milks it

A young German fashion designer is revolutionising high fashion by creating clothes with a staple from the fridge – milk.

Anke Domaske has developed a fabric called QMilch made from high concentrations of the milk protein casein, the first manmade fibre produced entirely without chemicals.

She says QMilch also has health benefits, with the protein’s amino acids being antibacterial and anti-ageing, and they can regulate the body’s circulation and temperature.

Her Mademoiselle Chi Chi label is now weaving the fibre into its collection, although Domaske plans to design a collection made entirely from the milk fibre.

“We have developed an all-natural fibre consisting of a very high concentration of casein, with a few other natural ingredients – and in only two years,” she says.

Luckily, the clothes don’t come with a use-by date. During the heating process, the molecules bind in such a way that the protein won’t compose.

Due to its antibacterial qualities, the milk fibre can also be used in medicine and makeup. Even some auto companies have looked into using the fibre for car upholstery.
