All systems go for Notify4Myki

start-up-idea-mykiA software developer has taken it upon himself to enhance Melbourne’s Myki ticket system by creating an app to warn users when they need to top up their card.

The new app, Notify4Myki, which costs $1.99 from the App Store, sends an alert to a Myki user’s phone when their balance is low or day pass is about to expire.

App developer Kim Beveridge, of Rhino Loft, says he created it after missing his train on several occasions because he was unable to top up his Myki in time after his pass ran out.

“You’d miss the train because it takes so long to top up your card. It’s quite frustrating,” he says.

Beveridge says he will develop another app for Android phones if there is enough interest. He has not approached Melbourne’s transport ticketing authority, but is happy to discuss a partnership.

“[The app] could be a lot better with their cooperation,” Beveridge admits.

Myki has been a contentious issue among Melburnians, so developing a Myki-related app that aims to simplify the system makes sense.

Can you think of any other services that could do with an app?
