Seeing progress where others see roadblocks, the Innovator Award winner at The Smart50 Awards 2023 is predictive transport analysis company Advanced Mobility Analytics Group (AMAG). In the face of an alarming surge in road fatalities and injuries in Australia, AMAG is a beacon of progress for which we should all be thankful.

The founders, Dr Simon Washington, Dr Shimul Haque and Dr Tarek Sayed, have more than 70 years of collective experience in analysing motor vehicle-involved crashes. They embarked on a mission to use technology to uncover the root causes of road-safety issues. Their guiding principle was clear: to identify when, where and why collisions and near-misses occur, and thus prevent them.

“Spinning the technology out of the Queensland University of Technology was a challenge as it required significant negotiation,” says co-founder Dr Simon Washington. “Throughout this process, there were additional challenges faced in terms of project financing. But I successfully negotiated a $1.5 million investment from ASX-listed PPK Group in 2020, and since then the company has gone from strength to strength.”

AMAG’s vision is to not only predict and diagnose safety issues, but to redefine the road-safety management paradigm by proactively preventing incidents. Its technology enables government bodies to monitor, manage and mitigate risks, moving beyond incomplete datasets to comprehensive predictive analytics.

The Innovation Award

The company’s innovation extends beyond borders, exporting its technology to eight countries. It is highly dedicated to improving road safety, and its near-term goals include supporting transport planning, future city growth and infrastructure investment decision-making.

“AMAG empowers policy makers to make informed decisions to improve road safety without having to rely on incomplete datasets to make those decisions,” Dr Washington said. “Most importantly, it can reduce incidents and save lives on our roads.”

The co-founders are committed to continually refining their analytics technology and are excited about further collaborations and partnerships with the industry and community to identify potential solutions for addressing these safety risks.

AMAG placed 45th on the 2023 Smar50 List.
