Dear Aunty B,
I need a break because I have absolutely had it after working 14-hour days for months. I want to take a month off over Christmas and take off on my yacht, but now I am having second thoughts.
I don’t think my employees are up to it and I will spend the whole time worrying. Is it worth it? What do you think?
Robert B,
Sydney
Dear Robert,
Are you nuts? It is far better to have employees making the odd mistake while you are away than dropping dead from stress.
Being an entrepreneur is about stamina, time management… and frankly, staying alive. It’s a marathon and you have to last the distance. Many can’t, so making it to the end is a competitive advantage. But you can’t do that without your health.
You will also find that having a good break will rejuvenate you. You will arrive back with a lot of new ideas and re-enthuse your staff and customers.
And I hate to break it to you, but your staff will do a far better job without you. I am sure they would welcome a break from you because you sound like a control freak.
Make sure you incentivise key employees with bonuses so they are really happy to do a great job while you are away. Tell them to contact you on big issues.
Now stop worrying and start planning your holiday!
Your Aunty B.
