I’m dealing with a micro manager of Kevin Rudd-esque proportions, help!

Dear Aunty B,

I’ve recently joined a new accounting firm, taking on a supervisory role. I’ve settled in well but I’ve recently discovered that my boss, the firm’s managing director, is a micro manager of Kevin Rudd-esque proportions.

It’s gotten to the point where I’ve started to give her running updates on my daily output, in anticipation of her constant calls and emails.

Should I wait it out and hope that it improves, or is it time to speak up?

Carly,

Melbourne

Dear Carly,

Developing an effective working relationship between a new boss and employee is always tricky.

Everyone approaches the workplace with different expectations and it could very well be the case that your boss is just keeping a close eye on you as you learn the ropes. Try not to take her management style too personally and let your performance speak for itself.

But if after a few months the situation hasn’t improved, or has gotten worse, it could be worthwhile organising a time to sit down with your boss and discuss your performance. Try a more casual setting, such as over a cup of coffee or an after-work drink.

Be brave and tell her your concerns, but be prepared to listen to her feedback too.

Be Smart,

Aunty B
