Dear Aunty B,
I am in a really difficult position. In order to expand I need to do business someone who is awful. He is arrogant, frantic, rude and dismissive but he “owns” a part of the supply channel that I have to use to get to market.
I have always abided by the rule that you only do business with people you like.
I hate him! He has no social skills and can’t see things from anyone else’s point of view except his own.
What do I do? Unless I do a deal with him I really can’t carry out my expansion plan.
Can’t bear the thought, Vic
Dear Can’t bear the thought,
If he owns part of the supply chain he is probably professional even though he is awful. And that is the crucial difference.
If he is absolutely necessary to the expansion of the business and you can carry out a professional relationship with him go for it.
Make sure he is dealing with a team of people, so when one of them needs a break from him he can be shifted to another.
Explain to the team what he is like and detail the plan you’re formulating to deal with him.
Explain that people with his type of personality like things done when promised and find some complexities hard to deal with.
Keep everything simple and in writing. Keep a close eye on things and know it is an ongoing risk to the business.
Be Smart,
Your Aunty B
