My boss won’t train me. So how can I get better?

Dear Aunty B,

I am in sales and my brief is very similar to my last job. I have done that very well and subsequently have been given a promotion. But now I am doing work that I have not been trained to do. I asked to do some training and got told “next year”, as we are too busy.

I am really annoyed. How do I explain to them that they will get a better result if they train me? And how am I expected to get better if they won’t invest in my skill development?

JB,
Gold Coast

Dear JB,

Geem and you’re in sales? Firstly, you didn’t do a very good job selling the training course to your boss if she said no. Leave it for a bit and refine your approach before going in for a second go.

Secondly, what a whiner! You’re in charge of what you learn and how you learn it. Step up! Put yourself through the training. Find ways to up-skill yourself with all the great information online.

Pick people’s brains. People are always flattered to be asked to share their knowledge. For you to get any further up the career ladder you are going to have to change the way you think.

Good luck!
Your Aunty B
