Setting up a blog the wrong way has SEO implications so it’s a good idea to make sure its set up correctly from the start!
When I set up the blog for Reseo, I definitely made a mistake. We’re working on a fix at the moment.
There are three ways you can set up a blog:
1. You can create a separate domain or website for it – www.exampleblog.com.au
2. You can create a sub domain for it – https://blog.example.com
3. You can create a sub folder for it – https://www.example.com.au/blog
Lots of options, but which is the best approach?
First, let’s look at how a search engine views each of these blogs.
The separate dedicated blog website AND the sub domain will be treated as completely separate websites. So if someone links to one of your blog posts from their website the link will not pass to your main website unless you link to it from your blog website or sub domain.
But I think that from an SEO point of view, having your blog as a subfolder is probably your best option.
The reason is because you consolidate all your content under the one roof, so to speak.
Links and authority from links pointing to your home page are passed down to each new blog post you create, potentially helping them to rank well right off the bat. A high ranking blog post means to will be read by more people which means it will increase its chances of getting more links and ping backs to the post from your readers.
The other thing to consider is your website’s overall link profile. If someone links to your blog posts it creates an even spread of links throughout your entire site profile. I believe this is a good look from a search engine’s point of view.
Most sites have the vast majority of links pointing to just the home page. I think Google and the other search engines look at the entire website linking profile, so it’s really helpful to have links pointing to lots of pages in your site. It’s a signal of overall site quality, in that there is lots of content on your site worth linking to.
That must be a good thing!
