The key technology that is going to change the broadband/telephony environment is ‘ethernet over copper’. This technology enables up to 40meg bandwidth on a twisted copper pair (not as great as fibre but more than adequate for any probable use). This technology will require exchange upgrades but is already rolling out in all main cities. This technology will give high quality phone traffic using VoIP plus data using existing copper and fibre backbone. This is going to put a lot of pressure on current bandwidth costs.
