I just got back from the Retail Global conference on the Gold Coast. This has always been my favourite e-commerce conference and with good reason. There are some awesome networking opportunities throughout the entire conference and that always inspires me. Just taking a look around at what everyone else has been doing in the past year gives me a lot of ideas I want to try with my own clients. I found three cool ideas I especially like and want to implement.
On one site they’ve begun doing same day dispatch, and they’ve installed a timer on their front page that’s counting down until the next scheduled dispatch. Talk about creating a sense of urgency! It can also motivate buyers to add products to their shopping cart now instead of missing the dispatch deadline. I’m going to start using this with some of our clients right away.
One other little gem I picked up is great for retailers selling small, lower-priced items. The technique is to boldly state there is a maximum order size, maybe 30 or so. This puts the thought into the customer’s head that, “Hey, this item is supposed to be bought in bulk. Why am I only picking up one or two?”. This trick starts to boost orders because customers begin to order multiple pieces at one time, making each individual order larger.
One final tweak I found was to use your receipt page, or your “Thank you” page after the order cart payment. A lot of people use that last payment page to try to upsell additional items. Why not use your “Thank you” page to bring the shopper back, and offer to bundle the orders together. They get the impression that they’re getting free shipping on the second order.
Hope this is helpful, and I hope to see you there next year.
