A decade ago, a mobile phone here and there was an interesting sight; now the International Telecommunications Union says there will be some four billion mobile phone users before the end of the year.
ITU secretary general Hamadoun Toure says the number of worldwide mobile subscribers will reach a penetration level of 61% by the year’s end, compared to just 12% in 2000.
“The fact that four billion subscribers have been registered worldwide indicates that it is technically feasible to connect the world to the benefits of ICT, and that it is a viable business opportunity,” Tour says.
The ITU says Brazil, Russia, India and China have been the fastest growers, and are expected to account for more than 1.3 billion subscribers by the end of the year.
