I will return with new Aussie Google phone: Kogan

The developer of the Australian Google phone, Ruslan Kogan, has vowed to continue with plans to develop the first Australian mobile using Google’s Android operating system, and has admitted his credibility is on the line if he can’t deliver.

But Kogan is aware of the controversy surrounding the abandoned Kogan Agora device.

“My name and credibility are on the line. There are a lot of people doubting the Kogan brand,” he says.

“But there are a lot of people who have been positive and happy, saying they’re happy we’re not releasing something with limitations. My job now is to thank all of the supporters and show them what we’re all about, and show the doubters that Kogan’s coming up with reliable products.”

The Agora was scrapped due to “inter-operability issues”, according to the company. The device’s screen size was allegedly too small to support upcoming applications.

Kogan is optimistic the new phone will be received well, and despite being unable to pinpoint a release date says the device is “well into development”.

“I don’t want to announce a time at this stage, but we still will be one of the first Android phones in the market. It will also be at the same price advertised for the Agora.”

Kogan also played down rumours of abandoned Agora phones popping up for sale on tech sites, claiming any official Kogan product will be released only through the company.

“None of the abandoned phones will be on the market. I’ve seen articles pop up about some imitations starting to get launched, but these are in no way related to Agora.”
