Free web browser Firefox, a key competitor to Internet Explorer, last week racked up 500 million downloads since it was launched in 2004, Techcrunch reports.
To celebrate the achievement, parent company Mozilla has launched a project to raise 500 million grains of rice via the FreeRice website, an amount it says would be enough to feed 25,000 people for a day.
The Firefox browser has around 17% market share worldwide and 150 million active users. It is the only other browser with double digit support behind Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, which completely dominates with 75% of the market.
