Australian employees are more satisfied and engaged than global peers

A new global survey has found Australian workers are more than 10% more satisfied and engaged with their jobs than their global peers, with 37% saying they have no plans to leave their current job, compared with 33% globally.

A new global survey has found Australian workers are more than 10% more satisfied and engaged with their jobs than their global peers, with 37% saying they have no plans to leave their current job, compared with 33% globally.

The survey, by professional services firm Towers Perrin-ISR, involved 94,000 workers in mid and large-sized organisations across 21 countries, including about 1568 Australian employees.

It found 27% of Australian employees considered themselves engaged, compared to 21% globally, while 6% described themselves as disengaged, compared to 8% worldwide.

The reason for this high level of engagement appears to be the high-quality career opportunities offered by local employers: 44% of Australian employees were more favourable about their career advancement opportunities at their workplace compared to just 36% of employees globally.

There was even a big tick for Australian managers: 56% of employees saying that their senior management tried to be visible and accessible to staff compared to just 44% of their peers globally.

Hamish Deery, managing principal for Asia Pacific at Towers Perrin-ISR, says: “The survey showed that employee retention is most strongly influenced by the behaviour of the organisation and its senior leaders as well as the learning and career development opportunities available for employees.

“In order to keep staff engaged, Australian employers need to involve employees in organisational decisions and goals, ultimately resulting in the ability to directly influence operations and business outcomes.”
