India to review RIM BlackBerry proposals

The Indian Government may grant Research In Motion a reprieve regarding its proposed ban on the company’s BlackBerry handsets.

In a statement, the Government said the Department of Telecommunications will embark on a study that will determine the future of BlackBerry services in the country. However, this may well come after a 60 day review period, during which the Indian Government said it will proposals put forward by RIM.

Last week, RIM said establishing a server in India wouldn’t help make that data any easier to access.

The problem is that India, along with the UAE, wants to keep an eye on its citizens’ communications. RIM data is incredibly hard to obtain due to stringent security measures. The company maintains it cannot hand over private data and encryption keys.

“In fact, while RIM does not disclose confidential regulatory discussions that take place with any government, RIM assures both its customers in India and the Government of India that RIM maintains a consistent global standard for lawful access requirements that does not include special deals for specific countries,” the company said in a statement.
