Microsoft denies phone rumours

Despite reports from the Wall Street Journal that software giant Microsoft is planning to challenge the Apple iPhone with a device of its own, the company has said it is not working on any such product.

The paper reported that the company was in talks with telcos to begin producing a touch-screen smartphone codenamed “Pink” that would run on the Windows Mobile software.

“Microsoft is not going into the phone hardware business,” the company wrote in an email to reporters.

“We’re deepening our relationship with our hardware partners in order to create even better performing phones that are competitively priced, have the features people want, that are easy to use and just downright lust-worthy.”

While the company has not denied that the “pink” device is still in research and development, it has said that the device is in no way related to a product intended to challenge the iPhone.

There has been speculation on the internet for a while that Microsoft is planning a phone device of its own, and has even opened a Microsoft Application Marketplace for apps to run on Windows Mobile phones.
