THE NEWS WRAP: Amazon app store pulled from Google Play

Google has pulled Amazon’s app store from its Google Play marketplace, citing an update to its Developer Distribution Agreement.

Engadget reports the app store used to appear under the Apps & Games section, but mysteriously disappeared in the past week.

The distribution agreement originally blocked apps that had app distribution as their primary purpose, with Amazon using the loophole that the primary purpose of its marketplace was not to distribute apps.

Google’s updated developer agreement now bans any apps that “facilitates the distribution of software applications and games for use on Android devices outside of the Store”.

US struggles over drone regulations

The US Federal Aviation Administration is struggling to write rules regulating the use of drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), as lawmakers raise safety concerns.

According to ReCode, the FAA had hoped to have rules in place by next September. However, despite the massive potential commercial applications, the effort has been bogged down over concerns the vehicles could crash into other aircraft or buildings.

In Australia, operators need to be licensed by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority in order to operate drones and other UAVs commercially.

Xiaomi banned in India

Emerging Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has suspended sales in India, following a New Delhi high court injunction, with the move confirmed by its vice president of International, Hugo Barra.

The injunction came as part of a patent lawsuit bought by mobile equipment manufacturer Ericsson, TechCrunch notes.

“We have been forced to suspend sales in India until further notice due to an order passed by the Delhi High Court. As a law abiding company, we are investigating the matter carefully and assessing our legal options… Please rest assured that we’re doing all we can to revert the situation,” Barra stated.
