Sexual harassment on the decrease

A new survey shows sexual harassment in Australian workplaces is on the decrease.

Run by the office of the Sex Discrimination Commissioner, the survey finds 22% of women reported being sexually harassed, down from 28% in 2003. The results also show only 5% of men reported being harassed in the last year.

Commissioner Elizabeth Broderick told ABC the survey is an improvement, but also indicates many women do not report harassment.

“What I would say about the complaints is I think they’re just the tip of the iceberg,” she says.

“There is good research that shows that people who are in more precarious work relationships such as casual work, temporary work, contract work, are more likely to be subjected to sexual harassment.”
