iiNet, AFACT Federal Court decision due next week

The decision in the iiNet and Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft case will be handed down next week, a new report has claimed.

As reported in The Australian, the Federal Court said Justice Cowdroy will release his decision on the case much earlier than expected.

Last year, after several weeks of hearings, both parties said they would expect a decision to be made within a year. However, the announcement means the decision will have taken only a few months.

AFACT is arguing iiNet should have taken reasonable steps to cut off copyright violators from internet access. However, iiNet said it does not have the jurisdiction to do so, and instead believes the police should handle such matters.

Regardless of which party wins the case, the decision will have a major impact on the industry.
