New iPad unveiled

Voice dictation, a high-definition 9.7 inch, 3.1-million pixel retina display, a 5-megapixel camera and faster wireless connectivity are among the features of the new iPad announced overnight.

It will be available in Australia on Friday, March 16.

At an event in San Francisco, Apple’s senior vice-president of product marketing, Phil Schiller, said the display had more pixels than most high-definition TVs.

“The new iPad now has the highest resolution display ever seen on a mobile device with 3.1 million pixels, delivering razor sharp text and unbelievable detail in photos and videos,” the Apple Insider website reported.

The new tablet features voice dictation, and battery life will be improved to 10 hours on wi-fi. It is compatible with the 4G long-term evolution (LTE) networks Telstra turned on in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane late last year.

The iPad will be available globally on March 16, reportedly starting at $AU539 for the wi-Fi 16GB model; $649 for the 32GB and $759 for the 64GB. 3G (and technically 4G) is a $140 premium.
