Australia’s online retail spending worth $11 billion a year

Australia’s online retail spending is now worth approximately $11 billion a year, according to a report, while traditional bricks and mortar retailers take in over $220 billion every year (excluding cafés, restaurants and takeaway food).

Online sales in Australia are only 5.1% of what traditional bricks and mortar retailers achieve.

The total sales figure for the year ending March 2012 comes from the NAB Online Retail Sales Index.

In dollar terms, online spending grew by around 19% year-on-year in March 2012.

Traditional retail bricks and mortar retail outlets recorded year-on-year growth of 5.1% in February (on a non-seasonally adjusted basis).

“We observed an interesting spike in the latest data in electronics sales. This was likely related to the growth of tablet sales, with March coinciding with the release of various new products, including Apple’s new iPad,” the report said.
