Phishing reaches SMS market

A spate of ‘Smishing’ (SMS phishing scams) has been targeting Australian mobile phone users.

Typical requests from SMS phishing scams include personal details and a considerable upfront fee.

Despite the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s recent SCAMwatch alert, little has been done to protect mobile phone users, and pages full of victims’ posts on popular internet forums can be found discussing how to best deal with receiving SMS scams.

Mobile phone owners have fewer protections to SMS scams due to the fact that mobile phones applications don’t have spam filters as computer applications do.
