Way back before I started Taskmaster Enterprises, I worked for a large corporation.
It was difficult for a time. As you could imagine, my incredible talents were criminally undervalued, and it wasn’t long before I decided to branch out on my own.
During my time there, I heard a lot about how big companies, with their big HR departments, were experts at performance management. Strangely, I never got this sense. Indeed, the only time my excellent performance was discussed was during my annual, 30-minute performance review.
Annual performance reviews are great, but only when they are accompanied by regular performance chats that are held throughout the year. Some mangers like to have a sit down with key staff every week; for others, once a month is more than enough.
Whatever the case, the start of the year is a great time for one of these chats. Get the staff member in for 10 minutes, ask them how their break was and then discuss what you want them to focus on in the first few months of the year. You might also discuss upcoming initiatives or strategies that you will want to get them involved in.
It’s a great way to ensure everyone if focussed on the same things heading into what will be a busy year.
