Every year, on July 1 and January 1, a host of laws affecting business change in some big or small way. This January is no exception.
There are three big changes coming into play:
- The introduction of a paid parental leave scheme, under which staff will be entitled to government payments for 18 weeks of leave. Employers are responsible for administering the payments.
- The second tranche of national consumer laws, which focus on regulations around warranties and consumer guarantees, and some selling strategies such as direct selling. Employers may need to update documentation and staff training.
- Award changes under the Modern Award system, which will affect different industries in different ways and at different times. Clearly, it can be confusing so make sure you get advice where required.
There may be other more industry-specific changes that you need to be aware of, so check with your industry association or contacts.
The key is, don’t get caught out. Regulators don’t accept ignorance as a defence.
Get it done – today!
