Children are assailed by all manner of digital-based learning tools these days. If it doesn’t have batteries or an accompanying app, it’s deemed by marketers as too unsophisticated even for four-year-olds.
In the US, however, there have been a number of businesses offering ‘old school’ toys for children.
One of these is the Little Librarian kit, which started off as a mother and daughter’s toy project. It allows children to build up their own book collection, complete with library cards, overdue slips and reading journals.
It all seems rather twee, but the kit has proved a highly popular item in US stores and on Amazon.
While other firms are concentrating on building the flashy, internet-enabled pastimes for young children, maybe there remains an opportunity for more traditional toys in Australia?
Further to libraries, maybe find other activities to recreate into hands-on, enjoyable toys that children can engage with. Fun existed before Steve Jobs, you know.
