Software group Mozilla has released the third version of its increasingly popular internet browsing software, Firefox, attempting to break a world record in achieving the highest number of downloads in a 24-hour period.
The Mozilla Corporation release the software free of charge, and as of May 2008 Firefox holds an 18.41% usage share of global web browsers.
The record attempt had a small hitch, with servers unable to keep up with demand. But Mozilla worker Melissa Shapiro updated the company’s blog, saying: “Our servers are currently feeling the burn and should be back to normal shortly.” The blog also reports the software was being downloaded at a rate of 9000 individual downloads per minute.
The new software, which was in development for three years, is in direct rivalry with its Windows counterpart Internet Explorer, but boasts faster, easier and advanced navigation options.
The Mozilla Corporation is one of the most popular companies attempting to take advantage of the popularity of open-source web development, and any profits made are redirected into future projects.
