Virtual reality takes to the streets

The red light is the universally recognised sign for stop, but even it often doesn’t seem enough to encourage some motorists to hit the brakes.

Springwise reports that a South Korean designer has seen the problem and come up with an innovative solution– a virtual projection of pedestrians crossing the street.

Shown in red, the larger than life, two dimensional image of pedestrians crossing the street at the red light crossing can’t help but catch the attention of motorists as they approach.

Although not in production, the idea is that laser projectors installed in poles would be erected next to the traffic lights on either side of the street. When the light turns red, both virtual and real pedestrians start crossing the street.
