Online video viewing hits new record

More than 10 billion online videos were viewed by US internet users in December 2007, an amount the Centre for Media Research says is the highest number ever recorded.

The data, collected by ComScore, shows that online video is yet another area where Google is extending its dominance – 32.6% of all videos were viewed from Google-owned YouTube. Fox Interactive Media (owner of MySpace) ranked second on 3.5%, followed by Yahoo sites on 3.4% and Viacom Digital on 2.3%.

A total of 77.6 million viewers watched an awesome 3.2 billion videos on YouTube.com, way ahead of the 40.5 million viewers who watched 334 million videos on MySpace.com.

The average online viewers watched an average of 3.4 hours of online video during December, 34% higher than the average in January 2007. The average online video duration was 2.8 minutes, about the length of a music clip or movie trailer.
