Apple has claimed pre-orders for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have topped 4 million units in the first 24 hours, with chief executive Time Cook saying in a statement he was “thrilled customers love them as much as we do”.
“Pre-orders for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus set a new record for Apple, and we can’t wait to get our best iPhones yet into the hands of customers starting this Friday,” Apple chief executive Tim Cook said in a statement.
Aside from the number, the statement is nearly identical to one Apple issued when the iPhone 5 was released, claiming pre-orders of 2 million units, beating the company’s previous record 1 million units for the iPhone 4S.
The iPhone 5, in turn, beat out the first-day pre-orders for the iPhone 4S, which hit 1 million units. In a statement issued by Apple at the time, the company described the iPhone 4 as “the most amazing iPhone yet, packed with incredible new features”.
