Lenovo/Motorola’s Moto X finally released in Australia after more than half a year, but Aussies miss out on customisation

Lenovo subsidiary Motorola has finally released its flagship Moto X smartphone in Australia, more than half a year after its original US announcement, with Australian consumers also missing out on Moto Maker functionality.

Back in August of last year, Motorola – then a wholly-owned subsidiary of Google – announced the new flagship smartphone.

The company announced consumers could use a website called Moto Maker to choose key design features of their phone, including a colour for the front, back, a second colour for accented features (for example the edge of the camera), the amount of memory(16 or 32 gigabytes) and the default wallpaper.

Based on the users’ selections, the phone would be custom manufactured in the US from a plant in Fort Worth, Texas, and shipped to the customer within four days.

Unfortunately, Australian consumers will miss out on a local version of Moto Maker customisation of their smartphones.

The smartphone runs on the eight-core Motorola X8 chipset, which was previously used in the company’s DROID MINI, DROID ULTRA and DROID MAXX smartphones, with the Australian version coming with Android 4.4.2, KitKat.

The 4G/LTE smartphone also features a 4.7-inch AMOLED display, weighs 130 grams, features a back that curves between a thickness of 5.6mm and 10.4 mm, a 10 megapixel rear camera, with the company claiming 13 hours of talk time.
