Power Play: Wear your power lightly

Great leaders wear their power lightly. They never throw their weight around. They never suffer from that type of business low self-esteem where they need to let everybody know their place in the room.

Big enchiladas don’t need to advertise their power. They make space for others. They are benevolent with their power. And this means that by treading gently, they cultivate even more power.

Power is always sexier when it’s not obvious – when it’s implied rather than stated. Gentle rather than bold. And it usually turns out that light power-wearers tend to be much smarter (and nicer) too.

Putting people at ease (especially the newbies in an organisation) usually allows for their best talents to come to the fore.
