Power Play: Bad excuses are worse than none

Thomas Fuller said this and it’s very true. Power Players have more self-respect than to serve up a lame excuse. If you’re late for work then simply apologise: using “the car broke down” as an excuse is as bad as it is unimaginative.

Excuses (generally) are lowbrow. What they really are, are ways to avoid taking responsibility for the problem you’ve created.

Power Players know what most of us don’t: excuses usually prolong the problem. An apology for screwing up is the much more noble route.

Excuses are for the weak and cowardly. Take a big lesson from Power Players: don’t get into the messy habit of resorting to a lame excuse. Tell the truth. Give no excuse. Accept the consequences of your actions. Apologise. If you make a mistake, take your medicine and wait for it to wash over.
