There’ll be plenty of bleary eyes around the office today after hundreds of thousands of Australians awoke early to watch Usain Bolt become the first man to 100-metre gold at consecutive Olympics.
In the fastest-ever Olympic final, fellow Jamaican Yohan Blake stormed home for silver, ahead of America’s Justin Gatlin, while another countryman, Asafa Powell, pulled up injured and struggled over the finish line in last place.
Bolt’s jaw-dropping feat, in Olympic record time of 9.63, begs the question: how can a country of just 2.8 million people produce the fastest runners in the world?
