Independent MP Rob Oakeshott says he will not support plans to rush Peter Slipper back into the Speaker’s chair before Slipper is cleared of allegations of sexual harassment.
“I would not be comfortable about him coming back until all issues of substance are resolved,” Oakeshott said, according to the Australian Financial Review (AFR)
“Everyone is innocent until proven otherwise, but I’m seething that questions have now been raised publicly and Mr Slipper has stepped aside while they are resolved.”
Oakeshott said the allegations constituted the “darkest days” of the current parliament.
“I read the reports on Saturday with a sinking feeling on so many levels.”
