Qantas has announced an increase in its fuel surcharge in response to rising global prices.
In a statement to the ASX, Qantas international and domestic flights would be affected.
“Jet fuel is Qantas’ largest operational cost and market prices remain consistently high,” the airline said in the statement.
Domestic fares will rise by between $7 and $10 from April 5. International bookings will be charged between $10 and $30 extra from April 12.
“Average year-to-date fuel prices are at their highest level since 2007/08,” Qantas said.
“At current prices [Qantas] expects underlying fuel costs to increase by approximately $300 million from $1.95 billion in the second half 2010/11 to approximately $2.25 billion in the second half 2011/12, due to higher forward market jet fuel prices and increased flying.”
