Samsung has unveiled its Galaxy Gear 2 and Galaxy Gear Neo smartwatches at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, confirming speculation the devices run Samsung’s Tizen operating system rather than Google Android.
The core difference between the two devices is that the Galaxy Gear 2 includes a camera, while the lower cost Galaxy Gear Neo doesn’t.
Also unlike its predecessor, the Galaxy Gear 2’s camera is in the body of the smartwatch itself, rather than in the wristband.
Key features include a standalone music app which works with Bluetooth headsets and the inclusion of TV remote control functionality including an embedded IrLED sensor.
The device also includes the ability to download and run a range of apps, as well as a range of fitness features including a heart rate sensor, pedometer and exercise monitor.
The Gear 2 will be available in charcoal black, gold brown and wild orange, while the Gear 2 Neo will come in charcoal black, mocha grey and wild orange.
Samsung claims a battery life of two to three days for the device, which can be extended out to six days for limited use.
“With the Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo, we have enhanced everything consumers love about the Gear to offer unparalleled smart freedom in their everyday life,” Samsung Mobile chief executive JK Shin says.
Samsung is planning a global rollout of the new smartwatches in April.
