Gold rush: Apple to increase gold iPhone 5s production by one-third

Apple is set to increase production of the gold-coloured version of its iPhone 5s by one-third due to strong demand for the device.

According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, there has been particularly strong demand for the device in Hong Kong.

The news is encouraging for the tech giant, which has aimed to reclaim lost ground in China, going so far as to host joint launch events in both California and Beijing for its iPhone 5s and 5c devices.

However, the report also noted that the lower-cost iPhone 5c might have been less popular in Hong Kong than initially anticipated.

It is unclear whether any supply chain issues will prevent Apple increasing production of the device.

Reuters reported supplies of the gold-coloured iPhone 5s sold out on Friday, with additional supplies not expected until next month.

“While it is likely some of this is due to not having an early pre-order option for the 5s, we still believe it shows loyalty to the iPhone remains strong among Apple’s installed base,” ISI Group analyst Brian Marshall said.
