The US is rapidly approaching saturation in its mobile market, with smartphones now accounting for 80% of recent handset sales, according to new Nielsen figures.
The statistics show that smartphones now account for 64% of all mobile phones in the US.
Young adults from 25 to 34 are the strongest market for smartphones, with 81% penetration, followed by teenagers with 70%.
At the other end of the spectrum, smartphone users remain the minority of mobile phone users aged over 55, with older users also accounting for more than half of all feature phones in the US.
The figures also show that Android accounts for around 53% of smartphones in the US, ahead of Apple on 40%, BlackBerry on 2% and Windows Phone on 2%.
