Sony has unveiled its new flagship Android-based smartphone at the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, with the consumer electronics giant hoping the new device will help it fight back against rivals including Apple and Samsung.
As SmartCompany reported in November, the company hopes the new smartphone will be able to help the consumer electronics giant to fight back against Apple’s iPhone 5 and Samsung’s Galaxy S3.
Key features of the new device include a five-inch full HD 1080p display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor, a 13 megapixel fast-capture camera and support for 4G LTE mobile networks.
A key feature of the Xperia Z is a feature called Battery STAMINA mode, which automatically shuts down battery draining apps when the screen is off and relaunches them when the display is back on.
The Xperia Z is also NFC-enabled and will be able to share video and music with other Sony appliances by “touching on” their smartphone, with consumers able to share content with a Sony TV by “touching on” their smartphone to their remote control.
The company hopes to launch the new smartphone globally during the first quarter of 2013 alongside a smaller version called the Xperia ZL.
The new smartphone comes as the troubled electronics giant hopes to make a turnaround after ratings agency Moody’s downgraded its debt rating to one notch above junk in November.
