Square wants iPads in New York taxis

Square, the online payments company run by Twitter executive Jack Dorsey, says it wants to start installing iPads in New York City taxis to run its software.

According to the New York Times, the New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission is now considering the proposal to replace Taxi TVs with an iPad.

“Taxi drivers are among our most active and loyal users, with thousands of drivers around the country choosing Square as a more simple, cost-effective way to get paid for their work,” a Square spokesperson told Mashable.

“By partnering with the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission on this pilot, we’ve built a system that meets the specific needs of NYC taxi drivers and makes the payment experience even better for their passengers.”

David Yassky, chairman of the TLC, told the New York Times that the Square technology could open up the possibility for more technology in Taxis, such as Foursquare and other apps.
