Smartphone shipments rose by 74% in the second quarter from a year earlier, according to the latest figures from Gartner.
The figures show the industry grew as a whole by 16.5% from the previous correspond period to 428.7 million units, with 107.7 million smartphones sold around the world during the past three months.
“Smartphone sales continued to rise at the expense of feature phones,” Gartner principal research analyst Roberta Cozza said in a statement. “Consumers in mature markets are choosing entry-level and midrange Android smartphones over feature phones, partly due to carriers’ and manufacturers’ promotions.”
Android topped the list as the most popular OS, with a market share of 43.4%. Symbian took 22.1% of the market, followed by iOS with 18.2%.
