Ninemsn cuts jobs, restructures business

Media group ninemsn has slashed 10% of its workforce, including its mobile sales team, and has disbanded in-house web development group 9 Pixel.

The cuts, which affect about 20 to 30 employees, come after another 20 jobs were cut about 12 months ago.

“Ninemsn has identified areas within our business requiring acceleration, de-emphasis or integration to ensure the ongoing market leadership, operational efficiency and continued growth of our company,” ninemsn’s PR agency said.

“Given this organisational restructure, a number of staff have been impacted through revised positions, promotions or leaving the organisation.”

Ninemsn was once the country’s most popular website but has since been overtaken by media groups Fairfax and News Limited. Last year saw the loss of many of the group’s executives, including chief executive Tony Faure.

The job cuts are mainly due to major shareholder CBC Asia experiencing a major decline in the value of its media assets due to the downturn, including network Nine and magazine group ACP.
