GM to open new data centre

General Motors has announced it will build a new enterprise data centre in Michigan to help reduce costs.

The company – which has emerged after filing for bankruptcy in 2009 – has said $US130 million will be spent on the new centre and will be completed in 2015.

“The new facility and other GM data centres around the world support the tools the company needs to design, build, and sell the world’s best vehicles through digital applications enabling business functions,” chief information officer Terry Kline said in a statement, according to Information Week.

The news comes as the market for data centres worldwide has gained momentum, especially in Australia. Former Pipe Networks chief executive Bevan Slattery has started his own company, Next DC, purely focused on constructing data centres.
