New data released by research firm Canalys has confirmed the steady growth of the Android platform, saying Google’s mobile operating system now control 35% of the market.
The data also confirms the Asia Pacific region is now the largest smartphone market, with year-on-year growth of 98% to 37.3 million units shipped. Overall worldwide shipments grew by 83% to 101 million.
“HTC, Samsung, LG, Motorola and Sony Ericsson drove Android shipments in the first quarter, with each vendor shipping well over three million devices,” Canalys principal analyst Pete Cunningham said in a statement.
“Its worldwide reach, however, should never be underestimated. Canalys’ country-level data shows that the vendor remains number one in 28 countries.”
The United States was the largest country for smartphone shipments, Apple taking a 31% market share – representing 150% growth for the year.
