Internet giant Google has officially released the source code behind its new mobile phone operating software, Android.
Internet giant Google has officially released the source code behind its new mobile phone operating software, Android.
“Today is a big day for Android, the Open Handset Alliance and the open source community. All of the work that we’ve poured into the mobile platform is now officially available, for free, as the Android Open Source Project,” Google software engineer Dave Bort told itnews.com.au.
The release enables developers to use Android’s source code freely, to assist in the creation of new products. Unlike some open source copyright licenses, developers are not bound to release the source code of new products based on Android.
“Even if you’re not planning to ship a mobile device any time soon, Android has a lot to offer,” Bort says.
