Apple to use liquid metal for fuel cells

Tech giant Apple has now been granted a patent for the use of Liquidmetal, the alloy produced by a company it acquired last year.

According to CultofMac, the new patent describes “amorphous alloy” collector plates for a particular type of fuel cell. The fuel cells will reportedly use hydrogen to generate electricity.

Fuel cells are becoming a popular research tool among tech companies, as more sophisticated technology will allow users to charge their phones for longer periods of time – a problem Apple has had in the past due to its power-hungry software.

Liquidmetal scientists have previously predicted that Apple may put the alloy in fuel cells in order to improve battery length, according to CultofMac. One fuel cell, they say, could power a phone for several weeks.
