My business partner wants a new car. I want new computers. Help!

Dear Aunty B,

We had a good year last year and my business partner and I are in two minds about what to do. We would both like to upgrade our cars but I feel it would be more beneficial to upgrade our accounting systems and staff computers.

My business partner however, says it is equally important we turn up to appointments in good cars as otherwise people will take the perception away that we are not successful.

What do you think Auntie? The part of me that wants a new car is inclined to agree with him, which would also save us having a big fight.

Is a car important?

Dear is a car important?

Congratulations on your good year. And of course I am going to spoil your fun which is why you wrote to me. Maybe if you are in the wealth creation business, then maybe your clients would feel more reassured if you didn’t step out of a bomb when you visit. But I think that might be the only industry that really gives a hoot about what car you drive.

It is far more important to buy new accounting software and upgrade staff computers. If you are concerned about making a sales call in an old car, do the old park around the corner or get a taxi trick.

The most important thing you can be doing at this stage is to make sure your staff have the correct tools to do their job. Perception and your personal pleasure comes awhile back in the queue.

Good luck!
Your Aunty B
