Does my new sub-contractor need “chapter and verse” contract?

I have often signed sub-contracting arrangements with my large clients. They are a pain in the neck because there is so much fine print about what happens if we use their logo, confidentiality, IP and so on.

I have always used employees but I am planning to engage a sub-contractor to do a small job. What do I need to put in the sub-contractor’s agreement? Surely I don’t need chapter and verse?

Dear Deb,

No you don’t. You need a simple document that covers off on the basics. And you also need a local commercial lawyer who can draw you up a simple template that you can use next time you hire a contractor. The lawyer will put in the necessary bits that cover insurance and Work Cover. And you need to add a detailed list of the job you want done and the results you expect in a timeframe you specify.

It’s worth the trouble!
