Google, Microsoft bring the cloud to US Government

Internet and software giants Google and Microsoft have both spoke at a house of representatives hearing regarding the benefits of moving the US Federal Government’s computer systems into the cloud.

Google director of federal government group Mike Bradshow told the hearing that cloud computing can provide greater security and save money.

“Agencies face significant challenges with lost or stolen laptops that contain sensitive data,” he said in a prepared statement. “The cloud enhances security by enabling data to be stored centrally with continuous and automated network analysis and protection.”

Scott Charney, president of Microsoft’s trustworthy computing group, also said cloud computing delivered solid benefits. However, he noted it does create new security issues.

“Cloud computing in its many forms creates tremendous new opportunities for cast savings, flexibility, scalability and improved computing performance for government, enterprises and citizens,” he said.

“At the same time, it presents new security, privacy and reliability challenges.”
